Pronoms Y et EN

The pronounย y

The pronounย yย has two distinct uses:

  • It is the indirect-object pronoun used with things introduced by the prepositionย ร .
  • It is used to replace a spatial prepositional phrase. In this sense, it might be translated asย there.
  • For example:
  • ยซย Je vaisย ร  Paris.ย ยป โ†’ ยซย J’yย vais.ย ยป (“I am goingย to Paris.” โ†’ “I am goingย there.”)
  • ยซย Est-ce que tu travaillesย dans ce bureauย ? โ€” Non, je n’yย travaille plus.ย ยป (“Do you workย in that office? โ€” No, I do not workย thereย anymore.”)
  • It is used idiomatically with certain verbs, without replacing anything:
  • ยซย Il doitย yย avoir une erreur.ย ยป (“There must be a mistake.”)
  • ยซย Je commence ร ย yย voir un peu plus clair.ย ยป (“I am starting to see things more clearly.”)

The pronounย en

The pronoun en has the following uses:

  • It is the indirect-object pronoun used with things (including infinitives) introduced by the prepositionย de. It is also sometimes used in the same way with people (however, it is more common to use disjunctive pronouns rather than usingย enย in the case of people).:
  • ยซย Je parleย du problรจme.ย ยป โ†’ ยซย J’enย parle.ย ยป (“I am talkingย about the problem.” โ†’ “I am talking aboutย it.”)

  • It is used to replace a spatial prepositional phrase introduced byย deย (“from”). In this sense, it might be translated asย from there:
  • ยซย Je viensย de France.ย ยป โ†’ ยซย J’enย viens.ย ยป (“I comeย from France.” โ†’ “I comeย from there.”)
  • It is the direct-object pronoun used to replace indefinite direct objects; that is, direct objects that are:
    • introduced by the partitive article (including the plural indefinite article)ยซย J’ai buย du jus de pomme.ย ยป โ†’ ยซย J’enย ai bu.ย ยป (“I drankย some apple juice.” โ†’ “I drankย some.”)
    • introduced byย deย when the verb is negatedยซย Je n’ai pas vuย de vaches.ย ยป โ†’ Je n’enย ai pas vu. (“I did not seeย any cows.” โ†’ “I did not seeย any.”)
    • introduced by a numeral (including the singular indefinite article) or a plural expression (d’autres,ย certains,ย quelques)ยซย J’ai mangรฉย une pomme.ย ยป โ†’ ยซย J’enย ai mangรฉย une.ย ยป (“I ateย an apple.” โ†’ “I ateย one.”)ยซย J’ai mangรฉย quelques pommes.ย ยป โ†’ J’enย ai mangรฉย quelques-unes. • introduced by another expression of quantity (usually an adverb +ย de)ยซย J’ai venduย beaucoup de jus de pomme.ย ยป โ†’ ยซย J’enย ai venduย beaucoup.ย ยป (“I soldย a lot of apple juice.” โ†’ “I soldย a lot.”)ยซย J’ai achetรฉย trois kilogrammes de pommes.ย ยป โ†’ ยซย J’enย ai achetรฉย trois kilogrammes.ย ยป (“I boughtย three kilograms of apples.” โ†’ “I boughtย three kilograms.”)
