How to create a Digital Transformation Roadmap

A roadmap for IT Modernization requires prioritization of the activities that must stop, pause, and start.  Since resources are limited in any organization, a prioritization of the initiatives within the IT Modernization must occur as separate activities.  The recommendation is to prioritize based upon the sense of urgency and highest impact that can be achieved.  The measurement should be described in terms of the benefits that will be realized.  As such, the activities associated to the benefits of security and reputation to achieve the outcome of stabilized operations can be considered for prioritization first, then followed by the benefits of efficiency and effectiveness to achieve the outcome of modernized operations, and finally a prioritization on the benefits of agility and innovation to move toward the outcome of a digital transformation.

Outcome Description Benefit Measured by
1. Stabilize  Stabilize operations by resolving the Aging IT and technical debt that result in high risk and reduced security. Reputation User satisfaction
SecurityReduced vulnerability
2. Modernize  Modernize operations by focusing on reducing effort on manual and commodity tasks. Efficiency Productivity of employees and optimization of using technology
Effectiveness Cost savings and cost avoidance
3. Transform Transform the culture and workforce to be more agile, user centered design, and increased quality and compliance. Agility Speed in adapting to changing needs
Innovation Implemented experiments, reduced friction in accessing and using data, and ability to adopt new capabilities
